Not playing Caucasus any more for a while, but I used to. And I can tell you this:
Due to it’s downsides, like not being able to go for the weapons, wheels, or a weak spot, or even stop firing, it being bulky and an easy target, not being able to defend in close encounters, etc, it actually takes MUCH MORE skill than most other weapons that are manually aimed if you want to do well.
So saying that it takes minimal thought is not right. It takes A LOT of thought to plan and outplay someone when your weapon literally can not aim where you want it to.
But I agree that AI weapons should be like that, unappealing over manual.
But if you cannot aim at specific parts then how is it skill and not based on the luck of the enemy you attack?
You are simply choosing an enemy which is less likely to be able to hit you while you keep within the optimal range, I don’t see that as using a lot of thought, what else is there to it?
Aiming is the least of the skills as far as skills go… Aiming is a reflex and ability to anticipate where the enemy will be once the projectile hits.
BUT, when you simply can NOT aim, when you just chip away at the armor and can’t aim for the weapons to de-gun, or wheels to cripple, or a weak part, generator, etc… Then you have to outmaneuver, position, and basically fully outplay your opponent that can easily de-gun your Caucasus in a salvo.
A much higher level of skill is needed to outplay the opponents just by movement and positioning when that is THE ONLY thing you can do, while the opponent can do all of that PLUS aim at your weapon and destroy it like nothing.
(Turrets are different. deploy and move away so not talking about those, just Caucasus)
But again, AI weapons should be like that. Less preferable than manual weapons.
That is how i usually play, aimless and shitfaced, with an upgraded doppler to see where the enemies are.
sadly most people dont play by the minimap like i do.
I agree, but when you can do that and aim at the weak points or de-gun, it’s much easier than being handicapped by only being able to slowly chip away at the armor parts while the opponents WILL de-gun you or cripple.
That is the main weakness of Caucasus. And it’s a big weakness that takes some amount of skill to play around it.
In Crossout, it’s much, much more important to aim at weapons or specific points, than to let AI slowly chip at the armor. Making an AI mounted MG that on paper sounds good, actually terrible.
I have to disagree with that. I regularly see Caucasus users do extremely well compared to the rest of their PvP teams. Ofc if you can aim, Caucasus isn’t a great weapon. But the average XO player gets 2 digits scores on average with weapons you have to aim.
Somewhat related question: How do you know if a scorp player used his credit card? scorp shots flying 50m past my giant Kaiju spider while I’m charging up
I’ll add that outside of specific cases, I very rarely aim for weapons. It’s just much faster to simply blow the shit out of people. Dogs? Go for the cab. Breakers? Go for the cab. Kaiju? Go for the cab. Scorp hovers? Go for the cab.
But are you saying that that average player that can’t aim does extremely well on Cauc, better than a good player that CAN aim on manual? I highly doubt that… And you’ve already said: ‘if you can aim, Caucasus isn’t a great weapon’.
Depends. I remember a couple years ago, when we had that ranked mode around 7k PS. Made it to the very top of the event, it was exclusively Nova Sinus hovers, Cauc wheeled players, and me with Whirls on wheels. Whirls are absolutely superior to Caucs in every aspect you can measure… So yes, I’m saying those players couldn’t aim and were carried to the top 5% by pre-nerf Caucs, and the metagame that was revolving around silly hovers back then (it’s coming back guys, get ready).
It’s simple. If an aimbot weapon is as good in the hands of the best players than a weapon you have to aim, why would anyone bother with aiming? This game would be nothing but Caucs from the bottom to the top of any ranking.
There are very significant advantages to Caucs because of their nature. Yes, there are downsides too. But guess what weapon allows you to clean up burning people with weapons extremely efficiently? Caucs. It won’t miss that cab, it won’t get stuck on random magical hitboxes like projectiles, any burning cabin in range of a Cauc player who isn’t sleeping is 1 less player.
Yeah, that was pre-nerf Cauc. It suffered a few nerf bats on the head… Used to be nice, but now those downsides overshadow the little good it has.
About it being a good sweeper, it is. Absolutely. But we hardly choose a weapon based on it being good at finishing off near to death players.
