Explosion needs a buff

Specifically the effect/damage type, not the weapons themselves (well they kinda do but this is more on the explosion effect just not working)

Basically the explosion effect has become somewhat obsolete, especially on weapons that rely on it. Way way back in the day it was used mainly to get past defensive parts and possibly pop modules, generators ammo packs etc, or even damage internal parts and through that strip away more beefy structural parts off of builds and basically blow up holes in them. But with all the damage resistance and absorption changes, piercing damage etc, it has been left in the dust for the most part. These days it’s just basically tanked so much by everything that it fails to do what it originally was meant to do, and other stuff (like basic bullet damage) now does it’s job way better than it does.

Internal explosions still hurt (your generator or ammo box getting popped) but any weapon that uses explosions just don’t do much anything these days. The damage of the explosion effect just gets transferred and absorbed all over the place, to the point that just shooting at the center of mass with machine gun will strip away more structural parts and possibly pop generators etc with much more efficiency than shooting explosives at the center of mass. And you can’t really aim too much at specifics either, movement parts tank explosive damage, guns tank explosive damage, cabins tank explosive damage, and if you wanna hit anything behind those parts, using other types of damage works way better simple because it’ll destroy the blocking part and then get to the internals way faster than explosions have any chance of doing.

Explosion radius buffing cabins don’t feel like they do much anything to explosive weapons. Only explosive weapons that seem to do something with their explosions, are the ones that deal bullet damage with explosion being more of an after-effect rather than the main thing they rely on to deal any damage (autocannons and cannons for example). Mind you rockets etc used to have on-impact damage (not big but some) in the past, but then while they fumbled with damage resistances changes they also took that away from most rockets and missiles and it just became yet again another example on how the explosion effect itself just is too weak or just straight up needs to be recalibrated or reworked

Explosions do not feel like they do the kind of damage and destruction they should, while most bullet damage just chews through builds like they’re made out of cheese

yeah i agree. the ones who i think suffered the most from this is cannons. while the mastodon feels powerful it just doesnt hit that hard. heck some guns i hit with an explosive dont even get knocked off. i feel that alot of weapons tank far more damage then they should. some smaller guns like mgs survive a direct hit from an explosive weapon and… idk how to feel about that, especially if said gun gets a direct hit.
kinda funny to see a tiny gun tank a hit from a cannon though.

Back in earlier versions, explosions had a clear purpose: they were the “structure bypass tool.” Even if you didn’t directly delete a part, splash damage would propagate into internals, let you chain-break support pieces, and punish tight builds. That made explosives feel like they had a strategic role distinct from bullets.

I disagree with the topic title.
