Premium only affects battles. It will continue working after you log off, but you will not be rewarded for it unless you battle.

There’s a time limit on the premium. If it’s for 3 days (for example), the time starts the instant you obtain it and runs out 72 hours later, even if you haven’t played at all.

You might have a window before the premium starts (usually the first time you log back in). If you were logged into the game when you bought the packs, then it started already. You’ll have to log in to find out, and it will tell you how many days/hours you have left.
It works the same way most other games do, when you buy or otherwise receive premium time.
