i play drones (sometimes), and i get points…not always, but mostly… 
so it might not be the drones,…

Nah, problem is in drones targeting and points receiving mechanic.
You get points for each destroyed parts, not for dealt damage. You can get points for destroying parts by yourself or by damaging some parts which will be destroyed by your teammate. Dealing damage right into cabin do not give you points especially if enemy was not killed. Also killing enemy just by shooting his cabin gives you very little of points.
Knowing that i thing it is not surprising that drones that targets only cabin can give you so little of points

actually the whole points scoring can be bugged at times. ive had it where i chunked armor off of someone before they died and i got no points for it. it seems that if shots hit a few seconds before they die, even if you knocked off armor, you get no points and if you do they are very minimal.
i know this cause its happened to me more then a few times.

Seriously hate to say this but a kill is counted even if you do 1 point of dmg as the last person shooting.
yeah even if the enemy has 1 hp and you were the one to get the last hit on them then you get the kill but the amount of points varies depending how much damage you do and how many parts you knock off. the only ones that dont really count this are drones and auto aim weapons like the caucasus. since they both target the cabin you dont get a chance to shoot the armor unless they turn in a way which you can shoot them.
