Why I Love Genchat

I don’t bring it up out of nowhere.

here example of how it gets started. someone asking in gen chat for people to group with them but must have mic as condition to group. so I say NO I can’t i am deaf. wish they wouldn’t allow it because it excludes us from participation. where if chat is text everybody gets to be part of it.

IF anyone replies to that it continues other wise its the end of it.

NOT being obnoxious about it at all. the obnoxious one was person excluding anybody who can’t speek for what ever reason. its MOSTLY due to diversabilities. as reason they can’t.

That’s cool… Not sure I’m 100% with you on not allowing things EVERYONE can’t participate in, though. I mean, if that were the case, there’d be no strafing since my buddy is essentially one handed. With epileptics, you’d have no flashing lights or explosions. With folks with wartime PTSD, you’d have no realistic explosions, weapons or sound effects.

I could go on.

The game would be destroyed… and what improvement would that be?

The goal shouldn’t be to exclude features not available to everyone. It should be to make any reasonable accommodations we can.

A reasonable accommodation for the deaf might be some sort of voice to text transcription built into whatever group, not destroying the voice feature of the group.

Back when the ADA was being negotiated in America, there were threats to basically shut down every golf course in the nation because there was no way to make them accessible to everyone. Like… how is a quadriplegic going to play golf, anyway? But, the way the bill was originally worded, that’s exactly what would’ve been required.

Reasonable accommodations… Nothing less. Nothing more.

KEY WORD IS “REASONABLE”. Why isn’t my comment posting?

Reasonable. Yes.
Is preventing everyone from talking to each other reasonable to you?

no one is stopping you from communicating the old fashion way. text.

I got my list of issues that I can lay out for people when they ask me to group up BUT, and it’s a big smelly butt…over the years, I’ve found that simply stating “No thank you. I got issues. but thank you for the invite.” is one of the better ways to respond to someone in a general chat situation, rather than laying out the specifics of “why not” … As said earlier, games are a place where people come to escape from the ravages of life…that’s not my opinions…that’s a 6000 year old rule, maybe even a LOT older.

Safe to say, having a diverse set of disabilities does not necessarily mean we have to go around drawing boarders or setting boundaries in every conversation.

Back atchya.

well what do you think insisting on mic is?? Boundaries. who does that keep out??

text only. ? need sight to play the game so anyone playing can use text. thus NO boundaries.

It’s a situation I’ve personally been in, many many times. I won’t get into it but I can’t talk very well while needing to focus on something like battlefield tactics. I’m much better at text and using the emotes to direct the battlefield. Anyhow, when people insist on using mics, I just do my best to show them mic’s aren’t needed for people like us, you and I. We can say it till we’re blue in the face but lots of people need cold hard proof of it, so we need to show them that we can function just as well without them. Some see the effort and start including me while others don’t and, at that point, it’s their loss…I’ll play with the others who do appreciate it or, if they aren’t on at the time, then it’s time go solo and deal with the face-rolling without my backup buddies. You can’t win them all. That’s what I think.

Should we eliminate stairs and for saber one to use Wheelchairs and not walk because some people don’t have functioning legs?

That is what you’re insisting on. Crippling everyone for the sake of the few. I’m sorry, but it is selfish. You’re asking to rob people of the convenience and joy of hearing so that you can be included.

Not cool.

Extend your logic far enough, and there are no sound effects in the game, either. I get a tremendous advantage in battle by using high-end headphones so I can hear which direction the enemies are coming from. By your logic, that should be disabled as well.

Following your train of thought to its logical and robs everyone of joy and helps no one.

that was such a typical ableism comment. wait till you suddenly find your self with disability and how you suddenly go from full inclusion to zero inclusion.

let me remind you of a fact. text was part of the gaming world from the very beginning. mic has only been around couple of years.

So your ableism comment has no real relevance. I am talking about barriers being added after the fact. AKA mic. where your talking a access that was added later as a barrier to those who had access prior to the mic. and took their access away they had for decades.

where the tru disability is your arrogance that your superior to everyone else when your not your inferior for being so limited in your ability to get things done. That there is only one way when that is farthest from the truth. there are MANY ways to achieve the same goal you use the ones that work for the most people of different abilities.

AKA most diverse accessible forms.

I’m missing a portion of my frontal lobe with damage to my temporal lobe. Some 35+ years of personal experience being excluded from things. Why you trying to exclude me from my own conversation with assumptions that I’m not disabled??

You don’t know if I do or do not have a disability.

YOUR disability has led YOU to be an elitist and a bully.

I’m pretty sure there’s not much chance you’ll ever recognize that, though.

We must bow to YOUR disability because you’re sure to make sure we’re aware of it (on a text-based forum, no less). Meanwhile, you dismiss the possibility the individuals you’re communicating with may have disabilities of their own, but don’t insist on making their disabilities an issue for others.

Society now celebrates victims, so I’m sure you’ll find plenty of people willing to kowtow to your plight.
I’m not one of them. Sorry.

I don’t think my comment was directed at you. ITs not showing who I was replying too. in the comment box or I am not seeing it. I was replying to a specific person.

For some reason its missing the part of who I was replying too. it was aimed at 1 person who replied prior. NOT sure why that isn’t showing. who I was replying too.

THe comment you replied to was aimed at only one person NOT everyone.

This is an open public forum.
Please stop trying to start fights.

You can not control who reply’s to what. Also, you have the option to “not reply” or “not read” any topic or post. This goes back to the “Conversations are a two way street” thing.

If you only want to talk to one person, then only talk to that person. Simple.

I know your new here, and we are honestly here to help and talk about a game we love. If you tone it down a little I think you might enjoy yourself.

P.S. if you insist on trying to start fights I would except to start seeing your posts being blocked and your removal soon after.

We had a thread the other day, and someone suggested this should be the XO theme song.

You sound like youd get blocked a lot. Id probably block you if i was on your olatform.

Wtf is a diversability? Why even talk about something like that in a game chat?

Either way if you think this gsme is p2w youve already lost my respect. I despise p2w games and im not about to play one. People who say xout is p2w are just making excuses for them not being good at the game.
